Dwayne Polec, 28, was found with stab wounds to his chest, arm and neck after a two-hour search at a rental property in Melbourne's north on Saturday night.
He was rushed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Mr Polec's alleged assailant, Jorge Antonio Reyes-De Leon, was arrested at the scene and taken to hospital.
Police said he had mental health issues and was being treated for alcohol intoxication at the time of the incident.
Mr Polec's death prompted an outpouring of grief from members of the community who have been sharing their sadness over social media.
Mr Polec's mother, Emma, told 9News her son was "the best person you could ever meet" and she was heartbroken for the family.
"He was a really really good kid," she said.
Police have since searched Mr Reyes-De Leon's house in the south-east Melbourne suburb of Wheelers Hill, where they found three knives.
They are now appealing for information on the deceased man's Facebook account.
"He [Reyes-De Leon] was known by others and there may be other friends or family members that know something, they may have photos of him with other people," said police spokeswoman Kylie McGlade.
"If anyone knows who he is or who he associates with we would like to talk to them."
Community mourns
The Melbourne city council's annual St Patrick's Day march is this Saturday, but many city streets and areas will be closed off.

The city's Lord Mayor Sally Capp said the mood of the event was "euphoric" after the death of Mr Polec.
